After a review of suggestions for improvements aimed at streamlining the results delivery at Ireland’s top international stage race, the organisers of An Post Rás na mBan have announced that they will introduce electronic transponder timing for this year’s event.Utilising a well-established ‘MyLaps’ system supplied by Sportstiming.ie, riders will be supplied with a fork-mounted transponder which will record their finishing time at the end of each stage.
The new system will increase the accuracy and speed of delivery of results at each of the six stages in this year’s 12th running of the event.
“This is an improvement that comes at a cost and we will need a contribution of EUR€20 from each rider to help offset the considerable financial outlay,” says Event Director Valerie Considine. “Rás na mBan is volunteer-led and we have very limited budget surplus to work with.
“We recognise that supplying accurate results swiftly is an important requirement for a modern international sports event and we have engaged the services of Sportstiming.ie, who already have extensive experience of timing multi-stage cycle races.
“We think this is a very significant move to make the race work better for riders, teams and organisers and we sincerely hope that the riders will join with us in embracing this development.”
Competitors will collect their timing transponders at event sign-on in Kilkenny on September 6th when the fee will be collected.
