Recognising the role which Rás na mBan has played as Ireland’s leading international stage race for women since 2006, Sport Ireland continues to lend its support this year to the Young Rider classification of the event which runs from September 4th to 8th across Kilkenny, Laois, and Wexford.
The Sport Ireland Young Rider Jersey, a distinctive white jersey, will be granted to the best placed rider under the age of 23 on general classification at the end of each stage.
With the race attracting elite cyclists from all over the world in past years, including national and continental teams, the Young Rider classification offers U23 riders the opportunity to compete at both the top level, as well as within a separate younger classification. The Sport Ireland Young Riders jersey serves as a symbol for the next generation of Rás riders and as an inspiration for all Irish bike riders regardless of their chosen discipline.
Speaking at the announcement of the organisation’s support for Rás na mBan, Sport Ireland CEO Una May said, “Sport Ireland is delighted to continue our support for Rás na mBan and the Young Rider classification. This year’s competition will bring together riders from 13 different nations, including those who have competed on the world’s most prestigious stages like the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships. We look forward to witnessing an exciting event and wish all of participants the best of luck.”
Rás na mBan Race Director Valerie Considine welcomed the Sport Ireland support as the volunteer crew continued their detail preparations for one of Ireland’s most challenging and inspiring annual sporting contests,
“The support from Sport Ireland in the past four years has been invaluable in shaping the direction of Rás na mBan.
“While we aim to provide an international outlet for Irish bike racers, we also strive to do more than provide a competitive experience. The Sport Ireland Young Riders Classification is a focus to help encourage participation and nurture future generations of bike riders. The Young Rider classification is another key part of the race, which assists us in promoting women’s cycling in Ireland, showcasing the sport to a broader audience and inspiring the next generation of cyclists.
“We see this event as a key component in making connections between our event and cycling within the wider community. On behalf of the race organising committee I would like to thank Sport Ireland, Cycling Ireland and to Ministers Catherine Martin and Thomas Byrne for facilitating this additional support in 2024, which is a testament to their commitment to supporting women’s cycling in Ireland.”
